Starring: Steve Austin, Vinnie Jones
Genre: Action/Adventure
Playing on the success of the WWF wrestler Dwayne The Rock Johnson, it seems 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin has decided to join the movie bandwagon. If you have seen Death Race, then you definitely know what this movie has in store for you. Or rather lets put it this way, Death Race was a blatant copy of The Condemned. Although the story line is very close to the above mentioned movie, the story does make you stick to your seat till the very end. 10 hardened criminals are chosen to be thrown on a deserted island. After 30 hours of survival, only one can go free. The survival of the fittest would be telecasted live all over the internet for the world to see. How do you win the first prize? Simple, kill the rest. Simple as it may sound the movie still has bits of twists and turns. A sure shot watch for those who love some nice punches and blood smeared fights.

    100 degrees in the Glade!

Dance festival titans unveil monster line up and DJmag media partnership.

There may be many heavyweights in the battle royale for the dance festival crown, but as far as scorching summer line-ups go, few can compete with the mighty new incarnation of Glade Festival. The event once described as the "Glastonbury of dance music" has been rebooted and emerges with a new identity in 2009, at once familiar and better than ever.

    Crowd

This time out, Glade moves to the new bucolic environs of Matterley Bowl, near Winchester, for a bigger, better, louder, longer musical explosion spread over four days from 16th-19th July. Expanding the remit more than ever before, Glade will see some of the freshest names in techno, breaks, dubstep, funk and reggae descend to create audio Armageddon.

"The last venue was fantastic but we were having problems with late night sound levels like most dance events in the UK," explained event founder Nick Ladd. "Now we've moved to Matterley Bowl, the old Homelands home, and you can say what you like about Homelands, but one thing it did have was fucking loud music late at night.

"We're pretty confident that we're going to have the loudest late night sound levels of any festival in the country."

But of course, a sick soundsystem would mean nowt without good music rocking it, and in this regard, Glade's got summer sewn up. In a UK festival exclusive, indefinable, techno-tinged dance kings Underworld, top the bill, accompanied by Get Physical's electronic maestros Booka Shade, Timo Maas and Santos (as Mutant Clan), dark master of uncompromising electro Dave Clarke, Detroit innovator Juan Atkins, and Adam Freeland appearing alongside his full band Freeland, previewing tracks from his epic new album 'Cope'.

"I'm playing with a three piece - the drummer, vocalist and myself," Freeland revealed. "The vocalist is also playing bass and I'm doing synths and backing vocals. I think we'll play stuff from the first album and stuff from the new album, and then some of my remixes, which I've reworked.

"I've DJed at Glade before, and I thought it was a really great festival. I'm sure that it will live up to it! I know that a lot of my friends are going anyway, and that most festival goers, it's the one they choose."

"One act that I'm really excited about is Freeland," enthused Ladd. "And we've got Bloc hosting the techno tent, and in there we've got Carl Craig, Juan Atkins, Adam Beyer and Dave Clarke. So that's definitely a money shot for the techno fans!"

Also appearing will be some of the finest breaks acts in the land, in the grand Glade tradition, including Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts, Rennie Pilgrem, Deekline and Wizard, Koma & Bones and The Freestylers, as well as the biggest players in the increasingly huge dubstep scene, including Benga, Rusko live, Digital Mystikz and Starkey.

And if that's not enough, why not explore the wealth of world music, wonky and funk - with Femi Kuti, Nitin Sawhney, Hudson Mohawke and Finley Quaye.

"In terms of the diversity of the festival, that's what Glade is all about. The whole point is we're not just a bunch of soundsystems in a field. We're a proper festival," opined Ladd.

    lasers

In a special tie in, DJmag have hooked up with Glade for an exclusive special offer. Sign up for a one year subscription with DJmag, and as well as receiving 12 issues of the mag, and five free CDs (including our now-classic Richie Hawtin, John Digweed, Benga and Rusko mixes), you'll also get £15 off your Glade ticket. Simply sign up via Subcription.djmag.com first of all, and you'll get a unique code to input when purchasing your Glade ticket, entitling you to the money off. It couldn't be easier.

Tickets for everyone else are priced at £125+BF and are available from gladefestival.com

    60 Seconds With... Len Faki

Berghain resident Len Faki is one of Berlin's top tastemakers.

Whether spelunking the subterranean depths of pitch black techno, or aiming for the highest heights of filter disco, his dancefloor knowledge and ability to read the crowd has made him one of the most influential figures in dance music, and with his two labels Figure and Podium, Faki is cleaning up.

No surprises then that he's been tasked with mixing Berghain 03', the latest compilation missive from the uber warehouse club. Containing cuts from Radio Slave, Burial and Basement Jaxx, it's certainly an eclectic blend. We snagged Faki to learn a little more...

Your 'Berghain 03' mix is a lot housier in the second half than what people might expect – do you want to defy people's expectations of what you play?

„Well, I guess it might throw up a few surprises to anyone who has not heard me play at my Ostgut resident nights. During the extended long sets there, around six to eight hours, I have the perfect playground to move through house and techno. I love having the chance of taking people on a musical journey and travelling through all kinds of different sounds. So that was what inspired me and was the challenge for the CD as well. When you listen to the CD it's half techno, half house, but the basic theme and feeling is still techno. Paradoxically as it seems..."

You've included Burial's remix of Bloc Party as the last track – is dubstep something you like in general, and have you had the chance to play any at Berghain?

„Absolutely. I'm always drawn to music and artists who try to get out of the box, who dare to combine elements from all types of genres, which dubstep does, obviously. Especially Burial, exquisitely!"

What have you got coming up on your labels Podium and Figure?

Right now, the latest release is a new Chymera track, plus a drifting house remix by Deetron. And there is a lot more to come. Since last year I have focused so much on the label work, that there was just no way of taking care of it on my own anymore. So the label team grew, too. The next releases will be by tony Lionni, Pfirter, a new A.Mochi. a new special series, Figure SPC, is on the way too, The first one will be a 3x12inch from Jeroen Search. a bunch of all sorts of sounds and artists who come from various musical backgrounds. As you see, here I have tried to create a platform for different sounds. I am sure there will be something coming up on Podium as well, but later this year, because of a lack of time!"

    A Trak Interview

With his jaw-dropping new release 'Fabric Live 45', A Trak has extinguished any doubts about his own rights to fame after working with Kanye West.

Having won the DMC DJ World Championships at age 15 - the youngest ever contestant to do so - A Trak was already a legend when he started working for Kanye. Now, with his own record label Fools Gold, he has a foot in both the underground and mainstream worlds of hip hop, electronic, and alternative music. The result is 'Fabric Live 45', which moves from electro to house, dubstep, funk and techno in a way that makes perfect sense. We ask him what it was like working for Kanye, and what he has in store for us in the future…

Having learnt your trade as a hip hop DJ, what are your thoughts on the state of hip-hop right now? Where can it go into the future?

"I think in general a lot of the genre lines are blurring. I think a lot of different themes are coming together, and you're seeing more and more people from one sound come over to another sound. You're seeing more people from one sound becoming interested in other sounds - and that's always been my position in music anyway, because I come from doing DJ battles, which is a really underground thing, but I've also worked with Kanye and a lot of other high profile artists."

Do you think the electro hip-hop / B-More fusions that are coming through now have the potential to crossover to the more traditional hip hop crowd in the States?

"I'm not even originally from the dance music world. I'm a hip-hop guy originally. I would go back and forth between the more underground and the more mainstream rap music, and electronic music, and I like to bring my perspective to people from other worlds. Now you're seeing just everybody, all those worlds converge, so as far as where dance music is probably going to go, it's hard to tell."

How did you find playing for Kanye West as you were developing your own sound?

"I think Kanye always encouraged me, I mean, even though he's one of the best and most established musicians of the hip hop music world right now, whenever I would play one of my tracks he would get really excited, because he'd always want to tell me how to get my drum sets or bass going.

"He'd really talk to me as a peer, so I never felt that he was overshadowing me, he'd always surround himself with really creative people, in arts or music, you know people who have a really good outlook and who bring on a lot of creativity... So it was more of a conscious step towards being active with my own endeavours - I didn't want to just become known as Kanye West's DJ, and lose the accolades that I had gained as A-Trak. Once I started working with Kanye, I became even more aware of what I was doing as A-Trak."

Were you surprised at how massive Crooker's remix of 'Day 'n' Nite' on Fool's Gold has become?

I always knew that song was amazing. When we first commissioned that remix, if you had told me back then it would be the number one track in the UK, I probably would have been like' whoa, no way!'- I wasn't expecting it then."

What have you got coming up on Fool's Gold?

"On Fool's Gold, it's just like singles at any given time. This summer we're going to have our first real CD release, so that CD, followed by some new artist CDs in the fall, because you know we've been just doing singles for two years. And now, we're just solidifying our roster. One of the main things for Fool's Gold is just putting out singles with a consistent theme with the artwork. The tour, the artwork, everything has a common thread, and we're just waiting for the official CD release."

    Glade Club Tent Confirmed

Mulletover, Finger Lickin' and Further Project have been confirmed to host the club tent at this year's Glade festival. Following news that Winchester's Matterley Bowl will be the location of choice for the event – held from 16th – 19th July 2009 – the club tent is set to become an intrinsic part Glade's ever psychedelic nocturnal charm.

Further Project open the tent on Friday night with the mechanical tech house rumblings of Format B (Live), John Monkman (Live) and Disco Stu. Expect all the anarachy of FP's regular 'Final Fridays' mash up at the Rhythm factory amplified to eleven and set to stun.

Mulletover's Saturday night line-up fuses two decades of techno into one bang-on-point line-up. Representing the old school, yet sounding fresher and more progressive than ever is End Club supremeo Mr C. He will be joined by Jamie Jones who is set to make serious noise this summer – helped in no small part by his season defining epic 'Summertime' out 11th May on Crosstown Rebels. Master of atmospherics and the deepest depths, Adultnapper also represents on the night topping of a techno wet dream that will take some beating.

In true Glade tradition Sunday night pays testament to the sound of the breakbeat. Although taking a slightly smaller roll in this year's proceedings, breakbeats have always been at the core of what Glade do. And there is no label more equipped to represent this than the ever consistent Finger Lickin'. After a decade in the business, these guys know how to throw a party. And with the likes of Krafty Kuts, Soul of Man, A Skillz and Rennie Pilgrim on display this is going to be a send off to remember!

    Stanton Introduces SCS.3m Mixer Controller

HOLLYWOOD, FL – March 31, 2009 – Stanton DJ, an industry leader in the design and manufacturer of professional audio products for DJs, announces the official release of the SCS.3m, the next installment in their award-winning, SC System 3 series controllers. The SCS.3m is a portable new MIDI controller with a unique control surface that emulates the layout of a traditional two channel mixer, but is completely touch-sensitive and features the acclaimed StanTouch® technology introduced in its deck controller counterpart, the Stanton SCS.3d. Each SCS.3m will ship with a new version of Native Instruments’ Traktor LE that is based on the latest TRAKTOR PRO software platform, allowing the SC System 3 products to be used together to create a full DJ system with intuitive control over the robust software features introduced with Traktor LE. Using only the SCS.3m, SCS.3d, and Traktor LE, a complete DJ rig with performance control features that surpass the capabilities of traditional mixer/deck equipment can be setup anywhere in the world within minutes.

The SCS.3m incorporates all of the functions of a two channel DJ mixer, plus a host of new performance features made possible by Stanton’s unique touch sensitive control surface. The touch sensitive sliders can be used to tweak EQs, allowing DJs to bring in different elements of a song during a mix, or instantly switch the sliders to control FX parameters within Traktor LE. The wide, touch-sensitive crossfader allows for seamless slow blends between decks, but is also able to detect multiple finger presses, allowing for quick transform effects all in one control surface. The multicolor buttons can easily perform transport controls for starting and stopping playback, setting loops, doing EQ kills, or engaging effects without requiring a separate trigger controller. All of the visual indicators stay 100% in sync with applications supporting MIDI feedback, allowing for clear indication of the software settings and positions in low light situations. Additionally, the unique surface provides a new level of durability, since there are no moving parts to wear or break.

“The SCS.3m is the next step in creating a modular, flexible and scalable control system. It’s always been our vision to make the 3 series a powerful, adaptable, and expandable line of products and the 3m takes the next logical step in providing the mixer analogy to stand next to the 3d”, said Jim Mazur, Stanton’s Director of Product Development.

Every SCS.3m comes with the ability to unlock Native Instrument’s award winning Traktor Pro software. One of the first controllers integrating with the new Traktor LE, the SCS.3m is designed to interface seamlessly with Traktor’s internal mixer, and incorporate full application feedback from Traktor, ensuring complete parity between hardware and software. iTunes® integration, album art support, and broad file compatibility allow for unparalleled music collection browsing and management, so finding and organizing tracks is quick and simple. An advanced tempo detection / synchronization engine enables the DJ to sync the decks for an automatic beat match once music has been loaded into the virtual deck eliminating the traditional challenges of lining up two songs for a mix. For the more accomplished DJ, Traktor LE also opens the door to advanced performance techniques such as dropping FX and looping for live remixing.

The SCS.3m can be used as a standalone controller for basic software mixing, but when paired with the SCS.3d deck controllers, provide a completely mobile MIDI control rig that allows DJs to plug and play anywhere in the world without the traditional hassles. With a built-in powered USB hub, the SCS.3m can also be connected to one or more SCS.3d controllers, offering up a high tech version of a full traditional DJ setup, without weight, size and connectivity issues. Additionally, special custom presets for other popular DJ applications are available for free download on the Stanton website.

The SCS.3m will make its international debut on April 1st at Stanton’s Musikmesse booth in Frankfurt, Germany. The unit is priced at $249 Suggested Retail, and will be available in music and DJ retail locations worldwide in May of 2009.

    Manuel Tur preps 0201

Manuel Tur is set to unveil his debut album later this year.

When thinking about house music, the German city of Essen isn't exactly the first place that springs to mind. However, it's Essen that has birthed the young talent of Tur, who was just 16 years of age when he released his first twelve-inch back in 2002. As a mark of dedication to his home city, Tur has named his first full-length 0201, which is the area code of Essen. Those expecting a collection of dance floor-geared house tracks akin to his recent solo singles may be surprised to know that Tur has produced the album with home-listening in mind, with downtempo and abstract cuts sitting alongside broken beat-infused deep house and filtered French disco.

Speaking about the album, Tur states that it was "made up from samples that I've been collecting for almost 10 years now and that I've put together like a jigsaw or 'patchwork,' as is the title of the first track." There are even a smattering of vocals spread throughout, with Alexander East lending his soulful voice to forthcoming single "Will Be Mine," and Shaboom boss Mark "Blakkat" Bell (whom Tur cites as one of his major influences) taking mic duties on "Golden Complexion."

Luciano unveils new live show at Creamfields 2009

Creamfields have released their first line-up announcement for their English festival, which takes place on the August Bank Holiday weekend.

As is to be expected with Creamfields, they've drafted in some of the biggest international names from all corners of the dance music spectrum, filling eight arenas over the course of its two days. Trance superstars Tiesto and Paul Van Dyk will both play peak-time sets on the Saturday and Sunday respectively, whilst progressive titans John Digweed and Sasha are also split between the two days. The Saturday sees Mylo unveil material from his forthcoming album in a rare live performance, and there's also a big electro-house presence with sets coming from Erol Alkan, Boys Noize, Sebastian Ingrosso, Busy P, Kissy Sell Out and Steve Angello. If you're looking for bass-heavy kicks, then Saturday will also be the day you'll want to attend, with drum'n'bass and dubstep coming from Skream, Benga, N-Type, DJ Marky, Chase & Status and High Contrast. Sven Vath will be there to appease the techno heads, but the real highlights on the Friday come from the two electronic live performances. Laurent Garnier will bring his new live band show to the English festivals for the first time at Creamfields, whilst Luciano will present his Æther Live project. Over the last few years, the Chilean has favoured a standard DJ set when playing in the live arena, but this performance will see him return to his laptop for his new project. Creamfields is currently the only confirmed date for Æther Live, but keep checking back for announcements about additional live gigs.

The Sunday will see Basement Jaxx will bring their chaotic carnival stage show to the Cheshire-based site, with live performances also scheduled for 2 Many DJs, Dizzee Rascal, Deadmau5, and alleged inventor of disco, Calvin Harris. Dubfire and Timo Maas are also present, while remixers du jour Aeroplane are the sole representatives of the modern disco movement. Those unable to attend may be glad to hear that BBC Radio 1 will be on site, broadcasting an array of the live music on offer both during the Bank Holiday weekend and also in the weeks following the event.

    Hot Chip get Bugged Out!

Hot Chip have mixed the latest edition of Bugged Out!'s A Bugged Out Mix series, which is due for release next month.

The band are following in the footsteps of Erol Alkan, Miss Kittin, Felix Da Housecat and Klaxons by taking part in the series, and as with all of the previous instalments, the mix will be split into "Bugged Out" and "Bugged In" discs. The first CD deals with the house and techno that you can find the boys playing in clubs around the world, easing in with cuts from Gas and Theo Parrish before stepping up a gear or three. Throughout its 24 tracks it worms its way through stripped-back acid (Armando), dubstep (Peverelist), minimal techno (Mark-Henning) and even a new Hot Chip track in the form of "Take It In."

Those looking for a restrained home listening selection on the "Bugged In" mix, though, may very well be disappointed, as the Hot Chip boys have opted to lay down more of a house party selection that takes in everything from yacht rock (Hall & Oates, The Doobie Brothers) to grime (Dizzee Rascal) as it romps through genres with wild abandon.

    Florian Hecker does acid

Florian Hecker is preparing to release Acid In The Style Of David Tudor, his first full-length studio album since 2003.

Vienna-based Hecker hasn't been resting on his laurels since the release of Sun Pandämonium, his previous LP proper: In addition to numerous sound installation works across the globe and collaborative projects with, among others, Yasunao Tone and Russell Haswell, it was announced earlier this month that the Mego artist will once again pair up alongside Aphex Twin for a headlining live performance at this year's Melt Festival in Germany.

Comprised of ten exploratory pieces, Acid in the Style of David Tudor-as its title would suggest-marries the disparate worlds of avant garde 20th century composition and contemporary "rave culture." To whet the appetite a little further, the album will ship with an extensive 12-page essay "Climate of Bass Hunter: Florian Hecker Acid In The Style Of David Tudor" by Robin Mackay, founding editor of the philosophical research journal, Collapse.

A Mountain Of One prep debut album

A Mountain Of One are set to release their first full album in September.

The yacht-rocking, Balearic loving outfit will follow up their Collected Works retrospective with a CD full of new material, which was mixed by Guy Massey and Danton Supple, who between them have worked with acts like Coldplay, Morrissey and Spiritualized. The results have been given the title Institute Of Joy, and as to be expected, it's a much more polished affair. Zig-zagging between psychedelic pop, progressive rock and funky Krautrock, the album even manages to include a cover version of Leonard Cohen's "Who By Fire."

Whilst singer Zeb Jameson's voice and piano work will inevitably bring comparisons with Talk Talk's Mark Hollis, there are plenty more influences at work, stretching from Fleetwood Mac all the way to Pink Floyd. Speaking in a recent interview, A Mountain Of One's Mo Morris has stated that this record was about forging the band's "own sound," promising a record "full of hypnotising emotion—driving drums, pastoral folk, gospel choirs and voodoo healings for your soul."

    Trentemøller headlines Roskilde

Danish producer Trentemøller heads up the massive line-up of artists scheduled to perform at this year's Roskilde Festival.

It's not often that an electronic-orientated artist gets a prime slot at an event of such magnitude, but that will change in July when Trentemøller will take to the stage on Thursday night at the festival after each of the other six stages have shut down for the night. At that point, it'll just be the Danish man and his decks for a special two-hour exclusive set that will be full of "his own edits and bootlegs." Adding to the fun? Plenty of musicians who played on the producer's Last Resort, as well as his upcoming studio album.

Also appearing at the festival this year, as RA previously reported, are several other electronic acts, including Pet Shop Boys, Deadmau5, Diplo's new project Major Lazer, Royksopp, 2562, Fever Ray, Tom Middleton, Mungolian Jet Set and more.

    Mutek completes line-up

Mutek has announced that its line-up is now complete, adding a number of DJs and producers to its already jam-packed schedule.

Pilooski is most likely the biggest name to be added to a roster that includes Ricardo Villalobos, Carl Craig, Zip, Wolfgang Voigt, Akufen, Moderat, Appleblim and Mathew Jonson vs. Dandy Jack among many others.

All told, the highlight to our eyes is the RA night, which features Craig, Jonson & Jack, Tobias Freund, dOP and Moonstarr, but we're paid to say that sort of thing. There are plenty of other excellent events going on throughout the weekend, all linked below.

    Clone announce future plans

In a remarkable turn of face, Clone have announced that they will continue to release new music on six freshly created sub-labels.

After announcing just a few months ago that Clone were to close up shop as a record label, the Dutch imprint has sent out an e-mail letting its fans know that that is no longer the case. Instead of releasing tracks under the generic Clone name, Serge and his crew have decided to create a handful of specialist sub-labels as a way of targeting their new material to its intended audience. Speaking via e-mail, Serge outlines one of the reasons behind the change, explaining that "the specialized series will give us the opportunity to go deeper into certain styles and it will make it easier to work with new talented producers who are at a different stage in their career and musical development as some of the regular artists on Clone." Looking at their forthcoming releases, it's safe to say that there'll be a lot of fresh blood being pumped through the label's veins this year.

The first new imprint goes by the name of Clone Loft Supreme, and will feature the more traditional house and disco side of the label, with new material coming from Detroit house producer Reggie Dokes and Italo-obsessives Elitechnique. The Clone West Coast series will house the material of homegrown talent from the The Hague area, whilst Clone Aqualong deals with Drexciyan electro, housing Heinrich Muller (AKA Drexciya's Gerald Donald) and Victoria Lukas' new Zerkalo collaboration for its first two releases. Simple club anthems will find their way onto the imaginatively titled Clone Club series, whilst both house and techno fans will have something to shout about with the Clone Jack For Daze and Clone Bassment series respectively. The former will concentrate on updating the classic Chicago house sound ("one of the main inspirations of the Clone crew," according to Serge), whilst the latter will see the label move into techno territory, featuring the first vinyl release from Mike Dehnert outside of his own Fachwerk label as well as a four-track outing from A Made Up Sound (AKA 2562).

    Anthony Rother lights the Fuse

Anthony Rother is set to compile the latest mix in the Fuse series.

Following in the footsteps of the likes of Dave Clarke, Joris Voorn, Steve Bug and Deetron, the electro and techno veteran will get a single disc to showcase his DJing skills, providing a snapshot of how he's making the most of his new digital set-up.

Instead of focusing on just one of Rother's preferred styles, the mix takes in everything from Boys Noize's galloping electro-house through to Border Community starlet Ricardo Tobar's deep melodicism, with a strong techno backbone supplied by tracks from UR's Mad Mike and Wolfgang Voigt's recently re-released Studio 1 project. Rother's Fuse mix is also the first in the series that will be supplied with a second unmixed disc, which collects ten of the twelve selections into a handy DJ-friendly tool for fans wanting to recreate a bit of the Rother magic at home or in their own sets.
